A Woman’s Guide to Sleep: Guaranteed Solutions for a Good Night’s Rest $0.99 How many hours of sleep did you get last night? Five? Six? None? You’re not alone. Most women get far less sleep than they need — in any given month more than half report symptoms of insomnia. Women’s sleep problems are different from men’s because they have a different biology, psychology, and sleep patterns. A Woman’s Guide to Sleep is the first book to address your unique needs, and offer proven solutions that work.Your sleep is affected by many factors. Fluctuating hormones — whether it’s PMS, pregnancy, or menopause — can wreak havoc on your sleep. If you’ve just given birth, you stand to lose 700 hours of sleep your baby’s first year! The “architecture” of your sleep changes as you age, and you might find yourself suddenly waking hours off schedule. Health problems that affect women disproportionately, such as depression and pain syndromes, also erode healthy sleep. What you eat — or don’t eat, if you’re dieting — can sabotage your nights, as can that nightcap you have. And social pressures — juggling work, home, and parenting — can fill your nights with anxiety instead of restful sleep. These unique problems require unique solutions. Dr. Joyce A. Walsleben, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the NYU School of Medicine, and Rita Baron-Faust, a leading writer for women’s health issues, explain how sleep problems arise and how to combat them with the right sleep-promoting foods, supplements, exercise, stress reducers, and biorhythm adjustments, as well as with prescription, over-the-counter, and alternative treatments. You’ll learn to avoid the sleep robbers hidden in many common foods, medications, andsupplements. Drawn from Dr. Walsleben’s more than twenty years as a sleep researcher and clinician, many of these solutions are simple, surprising, and low-tech — and they really work. This book also tells you how to get a good night’s sleep when your partner is the one tossing |

Chronic pain prevalence in Michigan. $49.99 Chronic pain is an important public health problem that is associated with a host of negative outcomes. With the 2000 Census showing that our population is aging, these problems may worsen as the prevalence of chronic pain has been found to increase with age. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and correlates of chronic pain in a Midwestern state (Michigan). Participants were selected through a proportional sampling of Michigan’s 83 counties using random digit dialing software. Participants had a mean age of 50.84 years and 61.4% were female and 82.5% were Caucasian. The overall prevalence of chronic pain was 22.9% and increased with age. When restricted to only musculoskeletal pain, the overall prevalence was 15%. Those reporting the presence of musculoskeletal chronic pain tended to be female, earned less than {dollar}35,000 a year, had fewer years of education, and were not employed full-time. The most common sites of pain were the lower back, the knee, and the hip. Those with chronic pain had significantly more depressive symptoms than those not diagnosed with chronic pain. Reported pain severity was positively related to the number of depressive symptoms and interference with mobility, normal work, sleep, self-care, and recreational and social activities. Because chronic pain is an issue that influences many aspects of daily living, findings from this study may encourage health care professionals to examine patients for chronic pain during regular check-ups. Furthermore, findings on the prevalence rates for different sub-groups of the sample provide information about social groups that might be targeted for assessment and treatment. |

Essentials of Geriatric Psychiatry $96 The Essentials of Geriatric Psychiatry presents the essence of The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Geriatric Psychiatry, Third Edition, covering not only a wide range of important mental diseases of the elderly but also the so-called normal age changes that result in biological, social, and behavioral changes in older adults. Essentials of Geriatric Psychiatry reviews the knowledge that has transformed the practice of geriatric psychiatry. It is authored by both basic and clinical scholars—not only psychiatrists, but also contributors from relevant biomedical and behavioral disciplines—who make the sometimes complex material understandable. Its coverage maintains an eclectic orientation regarding theory and practice, beginning with demography and epidemiology of late-life disorders and physiological considerations of patient care, then continuing with all of the parent text’s chapters on diagnostic interviews—including chapters on laboratory tests and the neuropsychological assessment of dementia. Based entirely on randomized controlled trials, Exercise Beats Depression is a simple, yet effective program that can be done in the privacy of one’s home with minimal cost or equipment. Exercise sheets are also included to help guide the reader through the step-by-step plan.Jim Johnson, P.T. is a physical therapist who has spent over eighteen years treating both inpatients and outpatients with a wide range of pain and mobility problems. Health and behavioral problems associated with symptoms of pediatric sleep disorders. $49.99 The purpose of this study was to examine prevalence rates of symptoms of several sleep disorders in young children, and the relationship between symptoms of pediatric sleep disorders and other childhood problems. Two-hundred-seventy-six children aged 2 to 5 years were studied through examination of a pre-existing database. Children rated as high risk for having a sleep disorder displayed significantly more aggressive behavior and attention problems, as compared to children whose sleep was rated in the normal range. However, no relationship was found between symptoms of sleep disorders and body mass index, asthma, or allergies. In addition, no relationship was found between symptoms of sleep disorders and social skills. Twenty-six percent of children in this sample were at high risk for having at least one type of sleep disorder. Results are discussed with regard to implications for prevention and early identification of students who are at-risk for developing sleep disorders, as well as direct interventions for those students who have a diagnosed sleep disorder. |

High-Yield Cognitive-Behavior Therapy for Brief Sessions: An Illustrated Guide $76 High-Yield Cognitive-Behavior Therapy for Brief Sessions: An Illustrated Guide breaks entirely new ground in explaining how to weave together the powerful tools of CBT with pharmacotherapy in sessions shorter than the traditional “50-minute hour.” Written for psychiatrists, therapists, and other clinicians, the book details ways to enrich brief sessions with practical CBT interventions that work to relieve symptoms and promote wellness. An engaging and instructive resource of video illustrations included with the book demonstrates how to successfully implement brief CBT sessions for some of the most common and important problems seen in clinical practice—depression, anxiety, psychotic symptoms, suicidality, sleep disturbances, substance abuse, and coping with physical health issues. Written by practicing clinicians with extensive experience in combining CBT and pharmacotherapy, this volume builds on the constructs and techniques described in the authors’ earlier best-selling illustrated guides, Learning Cognitive-Behavior Therapy and Cognitive-Behavior Therapy for Severe Mental Illness. The authors describe in detail the general features of CBT that can be applied in less time than the 50-minute hour • The therapist and patient function as an investigative team; the power of this collaborative empiricism can be evident in even the shortest of clinical encounters.• Clinicians teach patients how to rapidly set agendas, focus on specific problems, pace sessions, and give and receive feedback on progress; this structuring approach is especially well-suited to brief sessions.• A basic tenet of CBT, psychoeducation can effectively be delivered in sessions shorter than 45-60 minutes and, in fact, may become a more dominant aspect of treatment during briefer time frames.• Patients can learn practical, high-yield methods for decreasing symptoms fairly quickly, making these |

Maybe a candy bar or a soda to get over the afternoon slump. Or perhaps a cocktail or a cigarette to help relax at the end of the day. And there are other “little helpers”-both legal and illegal-which millions of Americans rely on for feel-good purposes. Whether we’re talking Prozac or pot, cigarettes or Sominex, we automatically reach for chemical crutches to calm us down or lift us up, energize us or help us get to sleep. Unfortunately, all of them-from the French roast to the pharmaceuticals-have side effects. They don’t begin to touch the underlying problems that are making us feel bad to begin with. And some can be addictive, setting us up for a an emotional roller coaster; we feel great one minute, then we crash and burn, plummeting into the black hole of withdrawal symptoms of fatigue, stress, and depression. Fortunately, there is a new way to get the highs we need-naturally. In their groundbreaking new book, Natural Highs: Supplements, Nutrition, and Mind/Body Techniques to Help You Feel Good All the Time psychiatrist Hyla Cass and nutritional expert Patrick Holford offer a breakthrough program-based on nutrition supplements, herbs, and simple mind/body therapies-that will energize, relax, de-stress, and sharpen our mental focus without wreaking havoc on our minds and bodies. RLS can present itself in primary are and secondary care, across a range of specialties, such as psychiatry, rheumatology, and sleep medicine, and in the UK, the condition remains under-recognized and often regarded as a neurosis in spite of evidence that RLS adversely affects quality of life. Inappropriate clinical history taking leads to misdiagnosis and under diagnosis and a sense that the condition may be a “manufactured” one. Although RLS is effectively treatable and two drugs are now specifically licensed for RLS in the UK, the condition is generally poorly treated and investigated and often prescribed inappropriate drugs. Patients’ descriptions of RLS are and varied including “Elvis legs” and an “electric current” running through their legs. Because of such a broad, unusual spectrum of reported sensations, RLS is frequently misunderstood and misdiagnosed, and even classified as a psychogenic disorder. Patient group surveys in the UK also suggest a consistent delay in diagnosis, delay in referrals, and patients often being told to “put up with the symptoms.”Part of the Oxford Neurology Library, this pocketbook highlights the importance of RLS, the ease with which RLS can be diagnosed, the problems of misdiagnosis, current thoughts on pathogenesis and up-to-date treatments. The book serves as an invaluable quick reference for neurologists, trainees, specialist nurses, and general practitioners. |
